Irvine cleaners made news in the summer of 2011 for a hotel workers union strike. Some 50 individuals employed in maid services in Irvine staged a demonstration in favor of a state assembly bill requiring hotels to use fitted sheets and provide mops to housekeepers and other Irvine, California cleaning services employees. In the defense of the existing policy, a hotel spokesman said there was no need to replace all the sheets because the hotels provide a “bed wedge” to their employees. The wedges are triangular-shaped devices that are inserted between the mattress and box spring to help elevate the mattress and enable the workers to change the sheets.
