What’s unique about it is the decade-long partnership between Friends of Newton Hill and the city, which employs local youths to clean and maintain the park. Unlike other parks in the area of Worcester, Massachusetts which employ cleaning services, the Newton Hill park specifically targets 16- to 21-year-olds for the six week program which takes place in the summer and pays $8 an hour. Program organizers say it’s a great way to get the youths involved in the community and teach them work ethics and responsibility. The work involves litter cleanup, trailblazing, and masonry work among other things. In addition, the city also gains from the arrangement by employing the youths at a lower wage than that of a professional Worcester cleaning or maid service.
