Tips for Cleaning Electronics

image

Dust is annoying, and it's not good for anyone — especially those who suffer from allergies. Not only is dust no good for people, but it can also potentially ruin your electronics. Dust buildup on and in electronics can block essential components like fans. This can lead to overheating electronics, which can end up ruining them. Here are some tips to prevent this from happening.

Tip 1:

Use a cloth or microfiber duster cloth to clean electronics. Another good product to use for dusting is an electrostatic duster, which works well for removing dust. For anything with a screen, never use a paper tower, as it could scratch the screen. Paper towels are great for cleaning other surfaces around the house but are not so eco-friendly. Consider using some old t-shirts, undershirts or newspapers (for glass and window cleaning) instead, as they can easily be washed and used over again.

Tip 2:

Always read the manufacturers' instructions for recommended methods for cleaning your electronics. A television screen and a computer screen could be very different, so it's important to find out what cleaners and methods of cleaning are recommended for the specific product you need to clean.

Tip 3:

Spray your dusting cloth with the cleaner rather than the electronic product itself. This is a much safer method than spraying the electronic. Speaking of safety, make sure to unplug your electronic devices before cleaning them.

Tip 4:

Use baby wipes. Baby wipes are great for many things, and cleaning electronics is one of them. Keep some cotton swabs ready, as these are great for removing dirt in hard-to-reach places.

Tip 5:

Special cleaning for DVD players: DVD players attract a lot of dust, and heavy dust buildup can not only ruin the DVD player over time, but also cause potential harm to your DVDs.

Spills

Spills on electronics can be a huge problem, but they're less of a problem if you act fast and take some smart steps. You should know that cotton swabs dipped in isopropyl alcohol can be great for cleaning keyboards and push-button devices that have been spilled on.

Step 1: Turn off and unplug the electronic devices.

Step 2: Try to wipe up as much of the spill as possible to keep it from spreading. Once you have cleaned up the liquid then you should assess the damage to determine if you need to contact a professional to fix your electronic product.

Step 3: If a small amount of liquid seeped into the electronics, you may be able to let it dry out, or to remove the cover pieces and wipe up the inside. Use extreme caution when trying to do this yourself, and be aware that many warranties are void if you remove cover pieces from electronic devices.
