Spring Cleaning Tips

spring cleaning

For some, spring cleaning can be an overwhelming and stressful task. If that describes you, or you like cleaning but simply don't have the time, then why not give yourself a break and hire a bonded, reliable cleaner to do the spring cleaning for you? For others, spring cleaning is a time for renewal and refreshing of their homes, and they are excited to get started each time spring rolls around. If this describes your passion for spring cleaning, then you will find this article helpful as you read some great ideas and tips for spring cleaning success.

Spring cleaning can go on forever, so pace yourself and prioritize the most important rooms and tasks to get done.

Before You Begin

  • Invest in some quality rubber or vinyl gloves to protect your hands.
  • Have all cleaning products and supplies ready. Consider natural cleaning products, as they are better for you and the environment, and they often cost less than the commercial standards.
  • Springtime is a great time to sort through your clothes and make a pile of unwanted items. Consider donating your clothes to the numerous charities in your area that accept clothing donations. You can also cut up some of your old T-shirts or undershirts and use them as rags. They make some of the best rags!

Window Washing

Expert window washers suggest leaving window washing for a cloudy day, as the sun can cause streaking. Consider using newspaper to wipe your windows down, as it is the best for leaving streak-free windows. There are also some good microfiber rags on the market that produce a great shine on windows. Make sure to wash the panes down with soap and water and to have a lot of rags on hand for this project. If you're interested, you can learn more window washing tips here. Blinds and Drapes

Begin by dusting the valance and frame, then vacuum from the top to bottom, using the upholstery attachment for drapes and the brush attachment for blinds. You can also wipe the blinds down with a damp cloth.

Flip the Beds

Begin by stripping the linens off your beds, including the mattress pads and bed skirting. Make sure you wash the mattress pads and skirting, and then flip your mattresses over.

Vacuum out the Couches

Remove cushions from the couch; if they're leather, wipe them down well with a damp cloth. For fabric couch cushions, vacuum. Using an attachment, vacuum in all the corners of the couch and anywhere else there is dirt or where dirt might be hiding.

Clean out Kitchen Cabinets

It's a great time to dust and wipe down the cabinets. Look for any opened packages of food that need to be thrown out (if old or expired). Also keep an eye out for any chipped dishes.

The Garage

Are you really adventurous? If you answered yes, then head out to your garage and get busy! For a quick garage spring cleaning, start by removing objects from the floor. Sweep out the entire garage; it may take a few good sweeps to get rid of all the dust and dirt. Before sweeping, it's a good idea to dust the corners (and ceiling corners) for spiderwebs and dust. If you don't have anything in the garage that can get damaged from water then consider spraying the interior walls with a hose. Do the same for the floor. Have oil spots on the floor? Then before washing the floor, put some sand over the oil spots and leave it for a while to help in the oil removal. Spring is also a great time to update your garage. If you are considering a new garage door then make sure to find a reliable garage door contractor to install it for you.

The Bathroom

If any parts of your bathroom have gotten dirtier than you would like, then this is the time to clean it up. Cleaning the grout in the shower is often a neglected task, so get your scrub brush out, or better yet, use a toothbrush to get into the small areas. If you use a mildew remover product to help get the mildew off, then let it sit for 5-10 minutes before rinsing it off. This is also a good time to go through your medicine cabinet and vanity drawers and throw away any expired cosmetics, beauty products and medications.

Walls and Ceilings

Wipe walls and ceilings with damp cloths. Vacuuming corners can be an effective way of removing thick dust.

Area Rugs

Wash your area rugs and backings with carpet shampoo. You'll notice how clean they look afterward.

Bookshelves

Remove all the books off the shelves, dust the shelves and books. If you have the extra time, consider reorganizing the books to give a different look to the shelves.

Wax Wood Furniture

You can also take the opportunity to wax stone, concrete, brick and unglazed tile floors.

As mentioned above, spring cleaning can turn into an endless process! Make sure to set realistic goals for yourself, take your time and pace yourself. Also consider enlisting the help of a reliable cleaning person.
